Martinez is in Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay Area region of California. It is one of several cities to be the capital of California before Sacramento. Visit the John Muir National Historic Site, the residence of the conservationist and founder of the Sierra Club. Tour the 17 room mansion and the surrounding orchards. The two-story Martinez Adobe, built in 1848, can also be seen.
